Did you know that most accidents occur at low speeds? Most of them occur in a parking lot or parking garage, and involve somebody reversing their vehicle into someone else’s. While most of these crashes thankfully do not result in any serious injuries, they can often times end up costing a ton in repair costs. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) has recently launched a rear crash prevention safety rating program to help consumers find vehicles that will best help them mitigate these expensive backing up crashes. Among the top in their ratings were the 2017 Cadillac XT5 and the 2017 Jeep Cherokee.

Parking lot crash backing up

According the the IIHS, vehicles that are equipped with the combination of a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and rear automatic braking technology reduce backing crashes by an astounding 78%. In 2015, about 188,000 passenger vehicles in the U.D. were involved in crashes related to backing up, according to police. This means that by purchasing a vehicle with rear autobraking technology, you are not only drastically reducing your chancing of getting into an accident, but also avoiding the very high cost of repairs.

“Let’s face it. Some days we all could use help backing up, whether that’s in a garage with pillars that obscure your view, in a crowded mall parking lot or on a busy downtown street, the systems we rate in our first batch of tests will help reduce the chances of a backing fender-bender,” says David Zuby, the IIHS’s executive vice president and chief research officer in a recent interview.

Some of its other top-notch safety features include Lane Keep Assist, Lane Change Alert, Surround Vision, and Pedestrian Braking. The XT5 not only looks and drives amazingly, but will also keep you fully protected from possible accidents. This is why it won top marks in the IIHS’s latest tests.
