We hear the word “crossover” or CUV (crossover utility vehicle) all the time in vehicle advertisements, and if you’re shopping for a new ride you’ve probably considered one. But what really is a crossover? They have become one of the most popular classes of cars in the world and many manufacturer’s now offer them. Let’s take a look at the crossover and figure out why so many people now desire them.
Crossovers and SUVs are usually paired into the same category, but what sets them apart? Well, it’s all about the build of the vehicle. An SUV uses the chassis of a truck while a crossover uses the platform of a car. This means that for crossovers, the body and frame are one piece like a car (a “unibody”), while SUVs have a separately built body and frame that are placed together later (“body-on-frame”).
The benefit of a crossover for many people is that you’ll get a vehicle that handles like a car yet has some of the space and power that were previously only available with SUVs. Crossovers also generally have better fuel efficiency than “body-on-frame” vehicles. Many families have now ditched the minivan and switched to the crossover for their family vehicle. Crossovers usually come equipped with all wheel drive as well, making them more versatile and capable than some cars and minivans. For many people, the crossover combines the best features of many different classes of vehicles.
However, crossovers and SUVs don’t always strictly follow the guidelines. Some manufacturer’s have mixed and matched crossover and SUV features to make something more unique. For example, the ever popular Jeep Grand Cherokee is considered an SUV, but it has a steel unibody chassis, which could classify it as a crossover as well. With the unique setup of the Grand Cherokee, drivers get precise sporty handling and powerful off-road and hauling capabilities as well.
Something else that can be confusing is when manufacturers call their vehicles “crossover SUVs.” It’s not always easy to determine weather a vehicle in question is technically a crossover or an SUV. Some car makers use the word as more of a marketing term than an actual vehicle class. So if you want a true SUV or a true crossover, ask your dealer about the kid of platform the car you want is built on.
